I saw one of the best movies I've seen in ages last night - Once is a lovely, quiet little film that shows the relationship of two people as they bond over their shared love of music. The performances are wonderful, to the point where you come out of the theater not only feeling as though you know these people, but you really want to sit and have a cup of tea with the pair of them. It's all shot in a very loose, handheld style that works really well to add to the reality of it.
It's a movie about small moments, and those are the best parts of the film. It does more with a single look on someone's face than most films do with pages of dialog. The thing that pushes it over the top from being a good movie to being a great one is the music. All sung by the two leads, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, it's absolutely heartbreaking to listen to, even independent of the movie (why yes, I did run out an buy the soundtrack this morning!). Their voices convey so much emotion, and blend so beautifully together that it's magical.
