What it's really about

The Missouri legislature has finally abanonded the pretense of most anti-abortion forces that it's about the babies and gone straight to their real goal - punishing women, especially poor women, for having sex.

Of course they conveniently choose to ignore the fact that a lot of the women taking birth control are in fact married and trying to do the best thing for the children they already have or are taking it for health reasons. Oh no, in their world the only reason to be on the pill is because you are promiscuous and that simply won't do. They can't have women actually enjoying themselves because that would be the end of civilization as we know it.

It's particularly sad when the voice of reason in this sort of argument comes from a Republican but he makes precisely the argument that ought to be made in this case...
Rep. Bob Johnson, a Lee’s Summit Republican, offered an amendment that deleted infertility treatments, but reinstated contraceptives. Most of the money, he said, would go to county health departments serving women with no alternatives to obtain health care. “If we don’t allow for contraception for low-income women, we will have more unplanned pregnancies and more pregnancies ended by abortion,” Johnson said. “No one here wants more abortions.”
